French Wine Tasting

Went to a wine tasting last night here in Ann Arbor. There were 50 french wines from all over the country. My fav for the area was the Languedoc/south-west region. But in particular Domaine Berthet-Rayne Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition was my personal favorite.

Vadim Repin and Hans Graf at the DSO

This past weekend performance at the DSO features Hans Graf as conductor and Vadim Repin on violin. Vadim played Mozart's Violin Concerto #5 in A major K 219 "Turkish". It was amazing! The technical skills and musicianship was outstanding. He also played an amazing encore which featured the DSO strings plucking their instruments while he played over them with some unbelievable bow work which at points looked like it was a blur.

John Williams

Yesterday night was a wonderful performance at the DSO featuring John Williams (the composer) conducting his own works. I have enjoyed his compositions over the years, in particular Liberty Fanfare, The Five Sacred Trees (in particular Tortan movement), and the theme from Seven Years in Tibet, but the most treasured to me is his score for Jurassic Park.

Faiveley 1999 mercurey controlee la framboisiere

red-brick in color; initially slightly chemical-papery-old books like, then but after opening up wonderful earthy-dusty tones including a Shitake mushroom and floral notes

DSO Gala

Ryan at the Doors

Last night was the Gala at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I didn't get to hear much music because I was opening the doors.

Region: Bordeaux
Appellation: Pauillac Controlee
Vineyard: Domaines Baron De Rothschild
Quality: Grand Cru Classé
Alcohol Content: 13%
Food: beef w/ mushrooms and sause, green beans, au gratin
Notes: complex aroma, it tasted like earth/dirt (in a very good way) upon first opening, no tannins, dry, as it opened up it lost some of the grittiness and developed a peaty smoky aroma which was somewhat missing from the favors as you tasted it, plum is to sweet, tomatoes to acidic, perhaps like weak strawberries; the favor profile was long

Knussen on Knussen

This weekend took in the symphony. Oliver Knussen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Knussen), conductor; and Leila Josefowicz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leila_Josefowicz), violin. The program consisted of two of Knussens's pieces in the middle with Stravinsky's Fireworks at the start and Stravinsky's The Fairy's Kiss at the end after intermission. Fairy's Kiss was great as this is the first time I've heard it - it's a rework of one of Tchaikovsky's pieces.
